Furniture is a term used in letterpress printing, which refers to the low-height pieces of wood or metal that block out white space in a composition. Movable type is laid out and set in a chase, which must be packed out with furniture before it can be printed with.

Doves Flare was commissioned by After The News for Then/Now, an art project in Glasgow around the Forth and Clyde Canal. It was inspired by the notorious Doves Type, which was recently revived by Robert Green after being lost to the River Thames in 1909.
